I have seen it spelled both ways here. I prefer purfling. I will use "purfling" and someone will respond "perfling".
I believe it is "purfling".
Perfling sounds like a horse shoes term (points per fling)

It's not "what you say" because both are pronounced the same. It's just the spelling. And from what I can tell (scanning the web) it is indeed "purfling". Now, let's move on to "kerfing" and "kerfed lining". Lol. Mike |

I think "kerfing" is the act of making the cuts to create "kerfed lining". The width of those cuts depends on the "kerf" of the blade you use. |

Indeed, and particularly because kerfed lining is a cheap/easy alternative to solid lining, it has always bugged me that so many call any lining "kerfing," even if it is solid. |

I think the official nomenclature for kerfed linings should be changed to kerfing, to honour the many many kerfs per guitar that are never seen, but merely swept up and disposed of. |

"That is the sort of errant purfling up with which I will not put". There are still guitar builders who get upset by the use of "purfling" as a noun. ("It's a purfle, dang it!") I don't have a problem with purfling, or kerfing, or kurfing. Our language evolves, and it's never purflect. But "access" is not a verb! And "proactive" is not a word! Don't get me started. |

I'm glad that this site prevents run-away flaming. Politics, and religious disputes can go elsewhere--that's great. But I'm dismayed that "d**n" is auto corrected to "dang". I'm reminded of a story from my Lutheran school-teacher grandmother: My grandmother was a strict church-goer, and a grammar school teacher. She was alarmed when a school girl came to her to report that a "nasty" word was written on the playground. There it was, in chalk, "hell". She found the story amusing. We should too. Auto-correct is no excuse. |

"Cheap/Easy"? Solid linings aren't difficult. Nor are kerfed linings, or dientes (dentelones, tentelones, whatever.) Torres used kerfed linings. Frank, we should have lunch. |

Perfling? Who cares? Pronunciation is the same. Just don't use 'advise' when you mean 'advice', or 'loose' when you mean 'lose'. If you have a clue as to how to pronounce them, you aren't likely to miss. |
